Industry pushes for transition deal with EU on data

An interim deal on data must be part of the Brexit transitional arrangement if the UK is to avoid serious disruption to its £240-billion data economy, the employers’ organisation CBI has said.

Josh Hardie, the organisation’s deputy director-general, called for a deal on data in a speech at the CBI’s cyber security conference in London on 13 September.

Hardie welcomed the UK government’s promise to mirror the data protection laws of the European Union after Brexit, but said that Britain needs an “adequacy decision” from the EU so that it can prove that its data laws and business environment meet the bloc’s standards.
