Concerns over the UK exiting the customs union with the European Union will not prevent its departure, Simon Usherwood, a political scientist, has warned.
Chuka Umunna, a Labour MP, and Anna Soubry, a Conservative MP, argued in a report on 1 September that if the UK left the customs union, it would cost the British economy £25 billion a year.
However, Simon Usherwood, a political scientist at the University of Surrey and fellow of the UK in a Changing Europe project, told Research Fortnight that the report was unlikely to have any impact in the current political climate.
