Chancellor Philip Hammond has announced £100 million for a National Retraining Scheme to promote adult learning, as he seeks to present technology advancement as a post-Brexit opportunity for the UK.
Speaking at the Conservative Party conference on 1 October, Hammond said the scheme would be delivered by the government, working in partnership with the employers’ group the CBI and the Trades Union Congress.
“Technological change is transforming not only our economy, but our society and our politics at a rate that none of us have seen in our lifetimes,” he said. “I can promise you that it will be this technological transformation, and how we manage it—not Brexit—that will define the future of our country and our party.”
