Top economist to head Industrial Strategy Council

The chief economist of the Bank of England Andy Haldane has been appointed chairman of the independent body tasked with overseeing the adoption of the UK government’s industrial strategy.

The business secretary Greg Clark said that Haldane, who is responsible for research and statistics at the Bank of England and is a member of its Monetary Policy Committee, would give the council “authority and independence, as well as the benefit of his thought leadership in this area”.

Modelled on the fiscal watchdog the Office for Budget Responsibility, the council will assess the government’s progress on the commitments made in its modern industrial strategy. It will include senior individuals from business, academia and civil society from around the UK.
