Chief medical officer wants more regulation of health tech and AI

Innovative health technologies could transform the nation’s health, but more regulation and research in the booming area is needed, says England’s chief medical officer Sally Davies.

Davies takes a look beyond the NHS’s yet-to-be released 10-year plan and sets out her vision of what the future health of England’s population should—and could—look like in 2040, in her annual report published on 21 December.

After a year in which ethical questions over the use of big data and cutting edge science applied to human health have again been prominent, Davies says new technologies and devices need to be carefully evaluated to ensure they are effective, not harmful, and that they do not perpetuate health inequalities.
