Gyimah’s departure a ‘considerable loss’

Research and university leaders have lamented Sam Gyimah’s surprise resignation from his post as science and universities minister.

Gyimah stepped down from government on 30 November, after less than a year in the job, announcing he intended to vote against prime minister Theresa May’s Brexit deal. In a resignation letter, Gyimah said that a row over the UK’s role in the European Union’s Galileo satellite navigation system after Brexit showed that it would be “EU first” under the proposed Brexit deal.

A new universities and science minister is expected to be appointed on 3 December.
