HRA backs safe use of patient data

The NHS Health Research Authority has given its support to calls for a strong regulatory framework to govern the use of NHS patient data.

In a report published on 29 November, the Academy of Medical Sciences outlined a set of principles to ensure the secure use of NHS patient data in new technologies such as wearable devices and phone apps.

On 3 December, the HRA’s chairman Jonathan Montgomery said that the HRA “strongly supports” the academy’s principles “being taken forward as part of new guidance to help clarify the ethical and legal use of patient data in this area”.
