Government advisers urge fresh look at green finance

A taskforce of academics and business leaders has proposed the creation of a green finance institute to redirect government support for low-carbon technologies.

The government should launch the proposed institute, together with a green investment accelerator and a centre for climate analytics as part of a package of reforms to help the UK reduce its carbon emissions, the group concluded in a report published on 28 March.

The task force, chaired by Roger Gifford (pictured above), a former Lord Mayor of London, was created in September 2017. Its goal was to draw up proposals for delivering the investment needed for the UK to meet its carbon-reduction targets through green finance, including investment in technologies, infrastructure and startups.
