Life scientists warn of need to maintain mobility post-Brexit

A failure to reach a satisfactory agreement on Britain leaving the European Union risks damaging the scientific ties between the UK and the rest of Europe, top scientists have warned.

In a letter addressed to Brexit secretary Dominic Raab, scientists from the European Molecular Biology Organisation (Embo) urged the UK government to push for a strong deal for science and innovation.

“As an organisation that has successfully fostered transnational collaboration and mobility for scientists in Europe for over 50 years, we are concerned that the scientific ties between the UK and the rest of Europe will be damaged by the UK’s exit from the EU, and this would have a long-lasting negative impact on science and its economic and societal benefits,” the letter says.
