Prime minister Theresa May has fired the starting gun for the next Conservative leadership contest, plunging research and university policy into even more turmoil.
In a statement outside Number 10 Downing Street on 24 May, May announced she will step down as leader of the Conservative Party on 7 June, paving the way for a leadership contest to start in earnest the following week.
In her speech, she lamented being unable to convince MPs to back her Brexit deal, which would have protected the rights of European Union citizens including researchers—and set out a transitional period during which EU regulations would have continued to apply in the UK.
