Clinical academic to lead health research watchdog

Paediatrician and academic Terence Stephenson has been appointed chair of the Health Research Authority, the national agency responsible for the governance of clinical trials.

Stephenson is a professor of child health at University College London’s Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health. He was dean of the University of Nottingham’s medical school from 2003 to 2009, president of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health from 2009 to 2012, and chair of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges from 2012 to 2015. 

Stephenson will take up the role in September for three years. He takes over from Jonathan Montgomery.
