As the UK barrels towards Brexit, government proposals for a fast-track visa route for scientists have become a critical focus for research lobbying.
Announced on 8 August, the scheme will apply to STEM researchers as part of the exisitng Tier 1 ‘Exceptional Talent’ visa route. The government is proposing to “substantially and radically” expand this, including by removing a cap on numbers and lowering eligibility criteria.
Such visas are likely to become more significant if the government ends freedom of movement after Brexit on 31 October.
