Respected science committee head to stand down

Figures from across the world of research have come out to praise Liberal Democrat MP Norman Lamb, after the chair of the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee announced he will not stand in the next general election.

The MP for North Norfolk warned last week that Brexit had paralysed parliament and said that he would be stepping away from politics. His decision means that parliament could soon lose a strong voice for science if prime minister Boris Johnson calls a general election later this year.

Lamb has chaired the science and technology committee since 2017 and overseen reports on issues such as immigration and science, research integrity and the effect of Brexit on science.
