Robotic surgery researchers ‘need US partners’ after Brexit

The UK’s research and innovation in the field of robotic surgery is likely to suffer if the country crashes out of the European Union without a deal, a study has suggested.

The study, published in the British Medical Journal Open on 11 September, claims to be the first mapping the impacts of Brexit on surgery research using network analysis and simulation modelling. The team behind it mapped global collaborations in robotic surgery research and used mathematical modelling based on academic papers published between 1988 and 2017.

It ranks the UK as third in the world for innovation in this field, behind the United States and Italy.
