Key research roles reshuffled as Johnson culls cabinet

Chris Skidmore and Andrea Leadsom confirm departures from Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy

Science minister Chris Skidmore and his boss, business secretary Andrea Leadsom, are among those who have been shown the door in a huge cabinet reshuffle.

The defenestrations mean new faces will have to quickly get up to speed with delivering government promises to hike R&D spending and deliver wide-ranging change to research in the UK. Leadsom has been replaced by Alok Sharma, previously Secretary of State for International Development, but it is not yet clear who will replace Skidmore.
