Experiments on live animals at lowest level since 2007

UK data show that 3.4 million experiments were carried out on living animals in 2019

The number of scientific procedures carried out on live animals has dropped to its lowest level in 12 years, according to the latest data from the Home Office.

The department’s annual statistics show that 3.4 million experiments were carried out on living animals in 2019. This is a 3 per cent decrease from 2018 and is down from around 3.6 million in 2009. It is the lowest number since 2007, when there were just over 3.2 million experiments.
