Call for global economic rethink to reverse biodiversity loss

Partha Dasgupta says declines in biodiversity are undermining the productivity, resilience and adaptability of nature

A top economist has called for a fundamental change in the way society thinks about and approaches economics to reverse biodiversity loss, in a report commissioned by the UK Treasury and published on 2 February.

Partha Dasgupta, a professor of economics at the University of Cambridge, warns in his independent review, The Economics of Diversity, that significant declines in biodiversity are undermining the productivity, resilience and adaptability of nature.
