Peer warns PM of ‘major threat to scientific research in UK’

House of Lords Science and Technology Committee chair urges government to prevent job losses

The chair of the House of Lords Science and Technology Select Committee has written to prime minister Boris Johnson and chancellor Rishi Sunak, warning of thousands of job losses if cuts to the research and development budget go ahead.

Crossbench peer Narendra Patel said the committee was concerned about several recent government decisions “which will lead to—and in some cases have already resulted in—cuts to scientific research funding”.
