Questions over government Covid policy surge as researchers warn of third wave of infections

Senior scientists have criticised prime minister Boris Johnson over his decision to continue with plans to lift many Covid restrictions this week, despite growing fears of a resurgence of cases driven by the Indian coronavirus variant.

Johnson proceeded with the third step of a four-stage reopening roadmap on 17 May, permitting indoor gatherings and allowing all students to return to campus, despite prominent experts warning that the relaxation is likely to lead to a third wave of infections.
