A feeling of buoyancy was palpable at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool in September, as members gathered to hear how their leaders would like to reshape the country.

As the pound crashed and mortgage costs surged, amid already rocketing energy bills for households and businesses, some opinion polls put Labour more than 30 points ahead of the Conservatives­—a level of support not seen since before the 1997 election, when Tony Blair took power.
