Liz Truss steps down as prime minister, with leadership election expected over the next week

The future of UK R&D has once again been plunged into uncertainty after Liz Truss announced her decision to step down as prime minister following a chaotic 24 hours of political events.

Giving a statement outside Downing Street on 20 October, Truss said she recognised that she could not “deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party”, and had notified the King that she was resigning after just 44 days in office. She said a successor would be appointed within a week.
