Researchers slam approval of Cumbrian coal mine

Government accused of hypocrisy and undermining its own carbon-reduction targets

British scientists have reacted with dismay to the government approving the first new coal mine in the UK in decades, branding the decision “hypocritical”.

On 7 December, levelling-up secretary Michael Gove approved a planning application for the mine in Cumbria, which would produce coal for use in manufacturing steel.
