Paul Nurse calls for more investment in science as Tory leadership contenders promise tax cuts

Paul Nurse, the director of the Francis Crick Institute, has urged Conservative leadership candidates to prioritise science amid concerns the current political chaos could put a halt to crucial R&D plans.

Public spending has emerged as a key battleground in the race to replace Boris Johnson after he announced he would stand down as prime minister last week. Several leadership contenders have already promised to slash spending and cut taxes.
