“We need to unlock ODA research funding,” says Christopher Smith, branding GCRF hub closures “foolish”

A senior figure at UK Research and Innovation has criticised multiple aspects of the government’s approach to international research, calling the ending of funding for major collaborative projects with developing countries “foolish”.

Speaking at a Westminster Forum event this morning, Christopher Smith made a strong call for the government to return the international aid budget to levels last seen in 2020, when the government reduced Official Development Assistance spending from 0.7 to 0.5 per cent of GDP.
