Patrick Vallance—the government’s chief scientific adviser who helped steer the UK through coronavirus—has stepped down after five years in the role.

Vallance became a household name during the Covid-19 pandemic, when he appeared in numerous government press conferences flanked by then prime minister Boris Johnson and chief medical officer Chris Whitty.
