The creation of a dedicated UK science department—complete with its very own cabinet minister—was met with enthusiasm from the R&D community when it was unveiled in February.

After years of being tucked away in the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, science had finally found a new home within the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (Dsit), where it hoped to enjoy a higher profile in government.
