Science secretary defends ‘crazy’ visa changes

Opposition MP says plans will make it “virtually impossible” for UK to recruit researchers

Science secretary Michelle Donelan has defended upcoming UK visa changes from scathing criticism after an MP described them as “crazy” and a barrier to recruiting foreign researchers. 

In parliament on 21 February, SNP MP Stuart McDonald raised concerns about the upcoming visa changes, saying they will put the UK out of reach for scientists, especially those beginning their careers.
