UK artificial intelligence research given £110m boost

Funds accompany government’s strengthening of AI regulation, including possibility of “binding requirements” on big tech

More than £110 million in funding for research on artificial intelligence has been announced by UK Research and Innovation.

The news was timed to coincide with the release of the government’s response to a consultation on its “pro-innovation approach” to AI regulation, in which it raises the possibility of legislation that could tie the hands of companies building advanced AI systems.
