‘Missed opportunities’ for R&D and universities in spring budget

R&D sector welcomes certain announcements, but some say the government should be going further

UK chancellor Jeremy Hunt “missed opportunities” to strengthen R&D and improve university funding in his spring budget, representatives from the R&D sector have said.

Delivered on 6 March, the spring budget speech was light on R&D and universities, with the largest single sum of investment in the area coming from industry rather than government. But Hunt backed the life sciences and committed to funding Scotland’s SaxaVord spaceport.
