Ministers quizzed on whether Antarctic science is “an excuse” for geopolitical presence in region

An MP has questioned the “large amount” of money spent by the UK on Antarctic science.

James Gray, Conservative MP and chair of the House of Commons Environmental Audit Sub-Committee on Polar Research, quizzed ministers on what makes Antarctica scientifically unique and why the research that currently takes place there could not be done elsewhere, such as in a university laboratory.
