Northern Ireland considers postgraduate loans

The Northern Ireland Executive’s Department for Employment and Learning has asked for input on whether it should offer a programme of loans for postgraduate students to help increase access to postgraduate study.

DELNI launched a consultation on a variety of options for increasing access to postgraduate study on 9 June. One of the questions the department is consulting on is whether it should consider introducing £25,000 loans for postgraduate research students—the same action that is being considered by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills in Whitehall.

A consultation by BIS on the option of implementing £25,000 postgraduate research loans in addition to the present system of grant funding closed on 29 May. Most of the responses seen by Research Fortnight welcomed the recognition that PhD students needed more support, but said that existing funding streams would need to remain in place.
