The UK Independence party’s win in the Rochester and Strood by-election last week has had a mixed impact on academics and universities.
Research Fortnight contacted 13 university staff and three student unions, most of them in Kent, to comment on MP Mark Reckless—and in particular whether he could deter students from enrolling at universities in the area. The University of Greenwich and the University of Kent share a campus in Medway, and the University for the Creative Arts has one in Rochester.
Two universities sent official statements, emphasising the importance of a diverse student intake and European Union and global links.
