Queen’s speech reaffirms higher education and research bill

The government has reiterated its plans to enact new laws that will cement its reforms to higher education, research, innovation, data, transport and preventing extremism.

Addressing MPs and peers in the House of Lords on 18 May, the Queen, in a speech that is written by the government, said the higher education and research bill would “promote choice and competition across the higher education sector”.

The Queen also confirmed legislation to make it easier for new entrants to establish private universities. An accompanying document published by the government also confirmed protection for the dual support system to be enacted in law so that research and innovation were “sufficiently strategic and agile to meet future challenges”.
