Senior figures in UK science have urged government and parliament to do their utmost to prevent the UK from crashing out of the European Union on 29 March, after MPs rejected the prime minister’s withdrawal agreement in a decisive vote.
Their plea comes hours after MPs voted down the agreement reached between Theresa May and the EU by 432 to 202 on 15 January.
“Yesterday’s unprecedented vote makes the prospect of leaving the EU without a deal even more likely,” said Venki Ramakrishnan, the president of the Royal Society. “A no-deal Brexit would be a disaster for British science and innovation and I urge our elected representatives to put the interests of the country first and get a new plan to prevent this catastrophic outcome.”
