QR funding is ‘driver of researchers’ stability’

UK Research and Innovation needs to boost quality-related funding or researchers will suffer, MPs have heard.

The value of QR funding has fallen in real terms by 30 per cent in less than 10 years, Colette Fagan, representing the Russell Group of research-intensive universities, told the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee on 28 February.

Research funding in the UK has historically been distributed through both QR funding and responsive-mode grants awarded by research councils. In April 2018, UK Research and Innovation announced that it was reviewing the balance of this funding. This is the focus of the committee’s inquiry.
