UK to publish Northern Ireland bill while science minister meets EU research commissioner at G7

The UK government is poised to unveil plans to scrap parts of the post-Brexit trade deal struck with the EU in 2020, as the science minister George Freeman makes last-ditch attempts to save UK membership of the EU’s Horizon Europe R&D programme at a G7 meeting.

Prime minister Boris Johnson is expected to announce legislation this afternoon that would grant his government powers to change the Northern Ireland protocol—the system that prevents a hard trade border between Ireland and Northern Ireland following Brexit.
