Scottish parties spar over independence claims

Leader of the Scottish Labour Party Kezia Dugdale has rejected first minister Nicola Sturgeon’s claim that Labour would now consider a second independence referendum.

In a debate on STV on 6 June, Sturgeon claimed Dugdale had promised during a private conversation that Labour wouldn’t stand in the way of a second referendum.

Dugdale branded Sturgeon’s accusation a "categoric lie" on Twitter. The spat threatened to rock Labour’s position of being strongly opposed to a second referendum, which has been central to their general election campaign.
