Scottish court hears legal challenge to fracking ban

Two petrochemical companies are pursuing a legal challenge to the Scottish government’s ban on fracking.

Ineos Shale and Reach Coal Seams Gas, both based in Aberdeen, were due in the Court of Session, Scotland’s supreme civil court, in Edinburgh on 8 May in a bid to overturn the ban, announced in October 2017.

A moratorium on fracking in Scotland has been in place since January 2015. The decision to turn that into a permanent ban followed a consultation in 2017, which the Scottish government said showed “overwhelming” public opposition to the practice.
