£4.2m veterinary research hub to open in Wales

Lesley Griffiths, Wales’s secretary for environment and rural affairs, has announced plans for an EU-backed animal health research facility in Aberystwyth.

Working with industry, researchers at Vet Hub 1 will develop diagnostic tests and vaccines to improve animal health and reduce economic losses owing to livestock diseases. Staff will focus in particular on zoonotic conditions: animal-borne diseases that can pass to humans.

Research to advance veterinary practice and drive developments in biotechnology, animal medicines and other related industries will also be carried out at the centre.
