First resident moves into Welsh semiconductor cluster

Semiconductor manufacturer IQE is to become the first company to benefit from a planned compound-semiconductor cluster to be created in Newport, Wales.

The company’s decision was announced in a statement issued by the Welsh government on 11 September.

In 2015 the Welsh government allocated £12 million to the construction of the facility, which in May was sold to City Deal Councils, a group of 10 local authorities, for £38m. Of this, £8m will be spent on refurbishing the centre and the remaining £30m will be spent on equipment.
