Brian Binley, Conservative MP for Northampton, has attacked Les Ebdon, the new director of the Office for Fair Access, for being too keen on imposing fines on institutions that miss fair access targets.
In an open letter to science minister David Willetts on 6 September, Binley said that Ebdon “appears to be salivating at the prospect of fining institutions up to £500,000 … given that he is reported to be an advocate of using information on students’ family background, school performance and ethnicity to make lower-grade offers to poor teenagers.
