The UK is still in sixth place among the G7 nations for gross domestic expenditure on research and development, according to figures published by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.
Only Italy, with an investment in R&D of 1.26 per cent of GDP, is behind the UK. The stats show that the UK staked 1.76 per cent of GDP on research. The numbers are included in the science, engineering and technology statistics report published annually by the BIS and run only until 2010.
