A government-funded catalyst scheme has been set up to support commercialisation of UK agricultural research.
The scheme, which will receive around £70m, will be administered by the Technology Strategy Board and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council. It is intended to help businesses and researchers work together better, in an effort to support the government’s agri-tech strategy, published in July.
The catalyst will fund collaborative projects in any discipline that has the potential to boost the economy of the UK agri-tech industry. Projects can tackle both domestic or international agriculture problems. Funding will come from the £60m that will be provided through the TSB and BBSRC, and an additional £10m from the Department for International Development. This DFID money is intended to support the transfer of technologies to developing countries, particularly Africa.
