NHS plans awareness campaign about patient data

NHS England has unveiled plans to explain to the public how it will use patient data in a programme, Care.data, that aims to improve patient care and safety.

The programme will bring together information that until now has been kept separate by different NHS providers. It is aimed at providing a more complete picture of the quality of NHS care, and the data can be used to inform medical research.

All households in the UK will receive information leaflets in January to explain the system and its benefits. Prepared by NHS England and the Health and Social Care Information Centre, the leaflets are aimed at clarifying how people’s data will be used and that they have a right to object if they are concerned.
