The Royal Statistical Society has called for action from the UK Office for National Statistics to ensure that government, businesses and other organisations continue to have access to the information that they need as changes to the national census are considered.
“UK plc needs a much bolder approach from ONS to capitalise on data already held by government and to deliver the richness of information that comes from the census,” the RSS has said in a statement published on 1 November. It adds that census data is particularly important at a time when many businesses and other organisations are finding more ways to use information.
The statement was issued in response to a consultation being run by the Office for National Statistics about the future of the census. The ONS has proposed two options to modernise or replace the census. The first option is to run more of the census online while the other is to replace it with information based on existing administrative data.
