£20m in zoonotic disease funding announced

Two government departments and four of the UK research councils have provided a total of £20.5 million for research and training related to diseases that could jump from animals to humans.

Eleven research projects taking place in 11 developing countries will receive £19m during the next 5 years as part of the Zoonoses and Emerging Livestock Systems programme. The projects involve 19 UK research institutions and 30 overseas institutions.

Three of the funding awards have been presented to each of the University of Glasgow and the Royal Veterinary College in London, and two to the University of Cambridge. The others have been awarded to the University of Liverpool, the Pirbright Institute, and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.
