Home Office refuses to review law on psychoactive substances

The Home Office has said it does not intend review the Psychoactive Substances Act 2016 after two court cases on the sale of nitrous oxide put the legislation back in the spotlight.

The act, passed in January 2016, regulates the sale of legal highs in specialised shops and includes exemptions for their use in research as well as in healthcare.

Critics of the act have called for a full review of the legislation. Their criticism has been sparked by two cases, under review by the Crown Prosecution Service, where nitrous oxide was ruled as exempt.
