The Conservative MP for Kingswood, South Gloucestershire, Chris Skidmore has been appointed minister for universities and science at a critical time for UK science.
He replaces Sam Gyimah, MP for East Surrey, who stepped down on 30 November saying he could not back the prime minister’s plan for exiting the European Union in a crunch vote scheduled for 11 December.
In a tweet on 5 December, Skidmore said he was “delighted and honoured to have been appointed minister of state for universities, science, research and innovation” and would continue the tradition of having a dual role at both the Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy and the Department for Education.
