Next chairman of animal welfare committee appointed

David Main, a professor of production animal health and welfare at the Royal Agricultural University, will be in charge of the Animals in Science Committee, which provides independent advice to government on the use of animals in research.

The Home Office announced Main’s appointment as chairman of the committee on 18 December. Main, who is a veterinary surgeon, has previously been involved in projects such as AssureWel, which aims to improve the welfare of farm animals through the use of welfare outcome assessments that can be used in farm-assurance schemes.

He will take over from John Landers on 1 March 2019.
