Uncertainty for researchers as May government staggers on

Conservative MPs have voted to keep Theresa May as leader of the party for one more year, but the future of her government and its commitment to increase R&D spending remain mired in uncertainty.

May won a vote of no confidence on 12 December by 200 votes to 117, and cannot be challenged again as party leader for 12 months.

But the prime minister’s relief is likely to be short-lived as she still has to persuade MPs to vote in favour of her Brexit deal. It was postponing a vote on that deal that triggered the no confidence vote this week. She could also face a motion of no confidence being tabled in parliament by the opposition.
